Not to be confused with web space or web hosting a Domain name is an identity tag that you can 'attach' to your web space or email giving you a unique identity on the Internet. It looks better and is more easily remembered than the actual address which is numerical and looks something like 207.142.131.248.

Most commercial website's are built 'offline' or in English on somebody's computer, but to enable others to see them they have to go onto the World Wide Web. This is webspace - there's all sorts of different types of hosting and more information can be gathered on Wikipedia or Google definitions.
